Give a Damn, Give a Doodle
When last did you give a damn for a good cause? Johannesburg’s most inspired fund raising event, Night of 1000 Drawings, lets you to do just that, and it’s back and bigger than ever before. The theme for 2016 is Give a Doodle – encouraging people to scribble, shoot, paint, sketch or carve anything on anything – as long as it’s A5. Now is the time to give a doodle, give your art and make a difference.
The 1000 Drawings campaign culminates in a one-night-only art sale in November, but the volunteer crew is already in full swing, mobilising people to create art for charity. “The idea is to remind Joburgers to give a damn and give a doodle. It’s a great way to show that you give a hoot, or show that you give two hoots,” says Kelly McGillivray, owner of theSQUAD Creative Events. “People all over the city can set up Doodle Sessions and their artworks will be sold for R100 each, to raise funds for a worthy cause. They can conjure-up whatever they want – as long as it’s A5.”
Last year, 1000 Drawings raised over R100 000 for education, thanks to the incredible generosity of Jozi creatives, suppliers and volunteer supporters. These funds were donated to Streetlight Schools and have enabled them to build new classrooms. This year, the challenge is to double the number of artworks and the money for charity, so the creative and logistical pressure is on.
The 1000 Drawings Team have put together some simple guidelines on how to create a Doodle-Do session. The first step is to get super excited about the creativity that’s about to be unleashed! Take that excitement and visualise the “do”. It’s all in the detail, and outlined here for anyone who’s keen to join-in. If it’s an open Doodle-Do, please post it on Facebook – the 1000 Drawings social media team will help to get the word out.
